Located in a nearly forgotten area of the Caribbean, Cancun consisted of a 14 miles long series of sand dunes in a shape of a number 7, some parts were as narrow as only 66 feet wide, separated from the mainland by two water channels that opened out on to a huge lagoon system called “Nichupte”.
The coast line was formed of mangroves, tropical jungle and unexplored beaches. In the first documents, the name of Cancun was written as two separated words KAN KUN which means "pot of snakes" or "nest of snakes" in Maya.
These blue waters were once sailed by the Mayan “Putunes” (Mayan Indians from Tabasco) coming from the west side of the Yucatan Peninsula in 918 a.d. when they made some connections sailing around the mainland to the south of Cancun around the Tulum and Xel-ha area, then this beautiful paradise was only noticed by the natural wild inhabitants until 1527, when the Kings of Spain granted permission to the Conqueror Francisco de Montejo to claim this land as property of Spain. |
